Around 70 primary school pupils will compete at the annual Deutsche Bank Primary School Hockey Tournament, which takes place this weekend.
Taking place at Les Quennevais on Saturday 15th March between 9.30am and 12pm, the tournament forms part of the Jersey Hockey Development programme, which has been sponsored by Deutsche Bank since 2003.
The seven-a-side tournament will feature seven teams, each with a squad of a maximum of ten players. It is the culmination of a series of weekly training sessions which have been organised at Les Quennevais since September, designed to give more primary school pupils the opportunity to play hockey. A number of regular skills sessions have also been held at Springfield.
The five primary schools battling it out in the tournament will be Springfield, Plat Douet, St George's, Grouville and Victoria College Prep, who are entering two teams. They will be joined by junior club side E&Y Quackers. Sally Le Neveu, Coordinator of the Deutsche Bank Primary Schools Hockey Festival, said: "The best thing about this tournament is the spirit that it is played in and the enthusiasm of the boys and girls who are taking part. Some of the pupils taking part only picked up a hockey stick for the first time in September and it's fantastic to see how much they have learned and how their skills have developed since then. Hopefully we can involve even more schools in future Jersey Hockey Development initiatives, and our thanks go to Deutsche Bank for making projects like this possible."
