The Guernsey Specials Gym Club is looking to the future after agreeing a three year sponsorship with Deutsche Bank.
The deal will allow the Club to update its equipment and help to offset its spiralling expenses such as insurance, rental and coaching costs.
Set up thirteen years ago, the Guernsey Specials Gym Club gives children with physical and learning difficulties the chance to participate regularly in gymnastic activities. Having started out with twelve children, the Club has grown over the years and now has fifty-five children regularly attending, some of who have suffered bullying or problems with low self-esteem.
Head Coach at the Guernsey Specials Gym Club, Hannah Pearce, commented:
"The Specials Gym Club is extremely grateful to Deutsche Bank for its support, which effectively secures our future for the next three years. Much of the equipment we use has been with us since the Club started, so it will be great to update our apparatus. As well as fifty-five members, we have around 25 volunteers supporting the Club, many of whom are former members who care so much for the Club that they have stayed on to help."
Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer, Deutsche Bank Channel Islands, added:
"Deutsche Bank has supported the Specials Gym Club financially in the past and we are pleased to formalise our support for the next three years. The Specials receive no other States’ funding so we are glad to help secure the financial viability of the Club, which offers an important service to youngsters in the Island. The fact that so many volunteers stay on to help shows just how important the Club is to those who are associated with it."
As well as training and competing locally, the club also aims to enable the gymnasts to compete in both Jersey and the UK and in 2006 a group traveled to Luxembourg for a competition. The Club will continue to carry out fund raising to support these trips.
